The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide
that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard
lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s
Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges,
although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both
members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged
remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett
that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government
– did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese
about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife
Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007
that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark,
Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate
frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved
by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard
Wilkins was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the
remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters,
actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports
people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential
conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to
enable our elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’
he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by
Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be personally
invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling
cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have
included Pauline Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip
Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a
bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas,
as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of
mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free
membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very
high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up
the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of
Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent
of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish,
all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.

There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl Inn.
Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is well kept
and a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining room,
solid and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr,
that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm,
who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil
Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around
these parts. But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light
as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great
cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty. A mushroom
soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision.
Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp,
the sauce just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant
and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices,
drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of
gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite
of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart,
beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this
part of the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé,
this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice
cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to
pour deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for
lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early
start. But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be
rushed.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better
representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike
the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s
happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s
making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and
Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes
in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent
candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered
running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of
that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who
won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six
states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and
the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12
senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

approach of the centre-right Liberal Party.
Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent to achieve huge success
when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches
at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg
at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven Teals elected, swelling the lower
house crossbench to 15, with this tally including the four

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August,

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers
and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury
first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure
as the CEO of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls
leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back
in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and
John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime
minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was
out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned
senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and
that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could
bring down the prime minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since
2002 during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the
cat out of the bag about the VIP club
The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending
his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave
actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the
crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman,
Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes
reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among
the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which
exposed him to criticism over his own membership for
allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge,
which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded
Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said,
accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff
Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the
club’s hushed confines.

‘so exclusive that you have to be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported
in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership
is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline
Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class
in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek,
Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange
hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher
Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s
spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is
by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal
politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The
Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which
has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of
Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to
the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his
upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer
Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member and so is Teal MP,
Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe
Longo and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the
airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department
of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries
Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous
business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts,
frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’,
membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six
opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service,
a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army
of dedicated lounge attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave,
the ‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge in the wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara
Pocock and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth
Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the
Independent Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre
for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take
Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.
Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary
movies for the past four years, said she has never seen audience members have such a visceral reaction to a film.

Shyamalan, who was born in Mahé India but grew up in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania,

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.
dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus
from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after
a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close
at 7.066. Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC)
set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2%
band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker
than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month,
due to broad dollar strength, but the currency has
0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by
Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
“Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus
measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well
if local equities remain supported, similar
to what happened in Nov. 2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the
bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar,
up about 0.09% in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young
voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented
migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the
Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement
detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more
people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona,
with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong
support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian,
a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump
back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns
about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said
John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state
senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration,
specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent

in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.
Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that
he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.
Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about what they think about that.’
Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers
Union.
Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.
‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.
Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you
should be a little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’
Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued
that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax payers with the $23,000
bill.
One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March 7 but he also boarded a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra
route to attend his party’s election campaign launch.
Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister Anthony
Albanese being asked if he has included both his son and partner as ‘plus one’
Chairman’s Club members.
He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international one he is
alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston.
The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after
the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two
seats after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.
With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.
However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4 per
cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

Forget tiny chihuahuas peeping out of handbags à la Paris Hilton, or Taylor Swift with her adorably grumpy
looking Scottish Fold cats who have become celebrities in their own right.
When it comes to capturing my heart with a cuddly creature, it’s the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, 75, who’s reinvented himself as the internet’s favourite granddad with
his wholesome life with a menagerie of animals, who has won me over.
The jewel in the crown of his ever-growing brood of beasts is Schnelly the pig, who joined the family in April last year, making the star the
latest in a long list of celebrities to realise the joys of a porky pal – along with Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and the Beckhams.
I’m completely smitten with the cuteness of pet pigs. I lose hours scrolling through
Instagram, looking at pictures of furry little piglets with pretty pink snouts.
There are 255,000 Insta posts with the hashtag #petpig and I’ve probably looked at all
of them. Then there’s the 286,000 posts hashtagged #micropig and I’d hazard a guess
that I’ve seen all of those too.
So I’m rather excited to discover that there’s a pig
farm less than an hour from central London, where I can find out what it’s really like to have a porcine
pet.
While celebrities might get away with turning up to photoshoots,
TV appearances and fancy restaurants with all manner of
furry creatures, will I get the same reception if I take a pig for a stroll down the
high street?

club, bistro and bakery, for some refreshments after a trot
down the high street

and care for pigs
Learning how to feed hay to the pigs did make Samantha question whether it’s easier to stick
with a dog or cat as a pet
I’m hoping the Kew Little Pigs Farm will help me find out.
It specialises in miniature pigs, which pig lovers can buy or ‘adopt’ to visit on the farm.
Then there are the day trips. The Piggy Pet & Play package lets visitors ‘pet, brush, groom, watch and play with the pigs.’ The Pig Enthusiast package can include putting sun cream
on the pigs, and the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping
teaches you everything you need to know before buying your own micro pig.
Clearly I must go there!
And so I head to Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, where Kew Little
Pigs Farm is based.
When I arrive, owner Olivia Mikhail looks slightly concerned at the sight of my Converse trainers and cropped jeans, a combination that
will surely result in splattered shins.
However, Olivia has no idea just how prepared I actually am, because I have packed not only knee high wellies for
my time on the farm, but also my designer heels, for my glimpse into what life’s like as a pig-owning celebrity.

year, describing him as the ‘heartbeat’ of the family
Paris Hilton started the chihuahuas in handbags craze, and is also the proud owner of Princess Piglette
George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Jonathan Ross, Charlotte Church and even the Beckhams
have all kept pigs as pets over the past decade or so, while more recently Ariane Grande and Pete Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz
during their short-lived romance.
Comedian John Bishop gave rescue pig Milo a home for more than a
decade and was devastated when the pet passed away, saying he was the
‘heartbeat’ of the family.
They’re as much a celeb accessory as oversized sunglasses –
which is why I’ve brought those with me too.
But first things first. Before I spend an afternoon taking a petite pig for a stroll, I sit down with Olivia in the Kew Little Pigs cafe, to complete
the theory side of the Comprehensive Guide to Pig
Keeping.
It turns out there is quite a lot of admin involved in owning a pig,
alongside a rule book thicker than Harry Potter.
Who knew that you needed a license to walk a pig?
Who would imagine that you can’t feed pigs your kitchen leftovers?
It used to be common practice, but has been banned because of the risk of diseases such
as African swine flu and foot and mouth disease that can be
spread by consuming contaminated pork products.
Who can fathom having to fill out a form to drive your pig from one
place to another – again for disease control reasons?
After all the admin and mucking out, Samantha was delighted
to move on to the fun part – cuddles with Astrid
Samantha found that mucking out the pig pen was actually
a lot more civilised than picking up poo on a dog walk
Samantha came armed with wellies for her day at the farm,
but made sure to keep it glamorous
After swapping her flimsy trainers for wellies,
Samantha felt equipped to tackle her day on the farm
And who would guess that pigs have to have their own house?
I mean, it’s only got to be about the size of shed, but
it’s actually a law to uphold welfare standards.
I suppose none of this is an issue for celebrities who
have people to do paperwork for them – not to mention acres of space –
but to me it seems insurmountable.
Olivia senses that my dreams are crushed and attempts to reassure me: ‘It’s really not that
much paperwork. Look, filling in this form would take
two minutes.’
Moving on from the theory, we head outside for the practical part
of the course. Here, in large pens, are lots of little pigs
which are super cute, so this makes me happy.
I am given a rake to claw the pig poo into a dustpan. Both the rake
and the dustpan have long handles and I like the distance this creates.
It is certainly more civilised than picking up poo in a flimsy plastic bag on a dog
walk.
Clearing away pig excrement with proper equipment which allows you to maintain a civilised, and sanitary, distance makes me wonder if – despite the
paperwork – pigs might just trump dogs.

through town, but nobody batted an eyelid
Samantha treated herself to a hot chocolate while Astrid enjoyed some pig treats
Samantha swapped her wellington boots for high heels to glam up
to take her pet pig down to the town centre
for lunch
Taking a pig out for a walk is trickier than it
looks, and a lot of treats are required to keep things on track
Next, Olivia asks if I would like to feed the pigs.
Yes of course! She hands me some hay that’s stuffed inside what’s basically a
large fishnet stocking, the size of Santa’s sack.
The hay sticks out of all the holes, and it’s my job to
hang up the sack in the pig pen, so the pigs can eat from it.
This sounds easy. Only it’s not. ‘NOT THERE!
NO! IT’S GOT TO BE HIGHER! TIE IT ROUND THE POST! NO!
NOT LIKE THAT! NO!’
I feel like a failing contestant on The Crystal Maze, only this is worse because I’m now surrounded by hungry pigs and I cannot see a panic button.
I swear there was something on Netflix where murdered bodies were dumped in a pig pen, to be eaten by
the pigs. Or maybe the bodies were eaten alive. This definitely happens all
the time, according to TV, and now I don’t even know which is worse, the prospect of being felled by pigs eating through my
ankles, or the pressure to hang the hay correctly.
It is like my challenge on The Crystal Maze has been especially devised to amuse the inhabitants of hell.
I find myself grateful to make it out of the pig pen alive.
Surely I get to do celebrity stuff now?
Celebrities’ pigs are as stylish as their owners, so I’ve sourced designer outfits for my trottered chums.
I’d initially looked at diamond chokers by Dior, because what pig wouldn’t want a diamond collar?
But apparently pigs are happier in harnesses, which fit around the body, not
just the neck.
I hunt for a harness that an A-lister might pick for their pig, and I
am delighted to discover a pink leopard print harness with a matching lead.
It is by Urban Pup, a pet fashion brand whose website I’ve now spent more time on than all the other websites in my search history.
There’s the zebra print, the cheetah print, the pink argyle; the florals, the tartans,
and the hearts. There’s the range inspired by Legally Blonde and
the pet carrier that resembles a pink Chanel handbag.
Then there are the socks…
I turn up at the farm with more outfits for the pigs than I have for myself.
I guess this is what it’s like being a pig parent: #SELFLESS
I am introduced to Astrid, a 16 month old micro piglet who’ll fulfill my
dreams of walking a pig. I show Olivia all the outfits I’ve brought
from Urban Pup and she picks out a pink tartan harness with a matching lead.
I want to dress up all the pigs but Olivia says no.
That’s OK. There is probably some law about only one pig at a time looking this stunning.
When Astrid and I are dressed, we head into Old Amersham.
It’s a pretty market town in the Chilterns with cobbled streets and quaint white buildings
with beams.
So how will locals feel about a pig on a lead?
I imagine I may be sternly spoken to by a member of the Women’s Institute.
However, it turns out that Old Amersham is perfectly au fait with celebrity antics, given that Poirot, Midsomer Murders
and Four Weddings and a Funeral have all been filmed there.
On my pig keeping course I have learnt that pigs never poo where they eat, sleep or socialise, because they’re very clean, so from day one, without any training, a
pig will go outside to poo.
I am surprised then, as I arrive in Old Amersham, to find that Astrid has done
her business in her carry box. I try not to
think about this, as I hold her lead.
Our first stop is the Amersham Museum. I’m not a massive fan of walking around looking at things, but I hear the museum homes
a Tudor dining table that visitors are welcome to
sit at. It is about lunchtime, so I’m hopeful I’ll be served a Tudor banquet.
I quite fancy a tankard of wine and a bit of wild boar.
Unfortunately, Astrid does not, and so, despite being welcomed by museum director Briony, we leave pretty much as soon as we arrive.
We go for a stroll instead, but I have to scatter pig food pellets to coax Astrid along the pavement.
I guess celebrities get their assistants to walk ahead, trailing treats to entice the pet pigs
in the right direction.

However, doing it without an assistant, I find myself thinking that
it’s definitely easier to walk a dog.
Celebrity life is about lounging in luxurious surroundings, so Astrid and I head to The Griffin, a private members club, bistro and
bakery, that’s pretty much the Soho House of Amersham.
In the beamed building that dates back to the 17th century, there are gorgeous leather sofas
and cosy cushions. However, I have learnt on my pig keeping course that pigs are
happiest alfresco, so Astrid and I take a seat on the astro-turf terrace, beneath a pretty
parasol that wouldn’t be out of place in a Cotswolds shoot for Tatler.
It is here, as we relax like A-listers, that Astrid and
I are at our happiest. As I sip a coffee and eye-up a
chocolate brownie (I’m being a celebrity, remember, I don’t actually eat these things), Astrid puts her trotters up on the seat beside me and enjoys a few pig food pellets.
Clearly this is our natural environment, so it’s
probably just a matter of time before Astrid is snapped up by a celebrity to live life first class.
But for now, Astrid must mooch back to the mud, and I must head home
to wash pig poo off my wellies.
I am chuffed to bits to have spent an afternoon with Astrid, but as I think it all
over, on the train back to Marylebone, I know that I’ll never keep a pig as a pet.
Aside from all the legal red tape, my lack of space in London, and
the trickiness of trying to take a pig for a walk, there’s always the fear that the micro
pig might turn out to be not so tiny after all.
I’ve seen headlines about 4 ounce “teacup” pigs growing bigger than a bear,
and frankly I find it terrifying. So I’ll leave the pet
pigs to the celebrities.

rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s
great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.
A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light
and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and
squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by
way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side of bitter.
It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of
lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously
intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of
pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of
the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a banana
soufflé, this time the classic version but
ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its
molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food,
immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start. But first, another bottle of wine.
Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing
a spot on the waiting list.

1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and only
those with the deepest pockets can hope to
afford one of the lavish pads.
The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be an eye-watering £35million – around 70
times the average cost of a house in the capital.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One
Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.
Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest in making a
purchase at the scheme.
There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’
in the property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to
five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.
The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say
even the most modest property will start with a guide price
exceeded by only a handful of mansions in London’s
richest neighbourhoods.
The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,000
sq ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property
value of around £500,000, and 130 times the national average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s
Nationwide house price survey for November.
The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to make room for
a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as a car
park.
The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible for the creation of the basement substructure and superstructure.

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers Phones 4u – attended the topping
out of 1 Mayfair alongside senior members of the construction team.
The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter,
one of 79 at roof level, being put into place on the top of the nine-storey main apartment building.
No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will feature a
ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s
Map of the Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with a double height ceiling and
18ft high French windows overlooking the garden.
There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264
hand-set pieces of cut glass, a library and a garden gallery,
with seating areas opening directly onto the central
courtyard garden.
